Description
Patricia Olivia II is a sleek and ultra-high speed vessel that was built by Derecktor Shipyards of the United States. On sea trials Patricia Olivia II achieved 52 knots at full displacement, making it the fastest passenger-only catamaran in the world.
Derecktor Shipyards is one of the United States’ foremost leaders in aluminum, commercial and luxury boat construction, service, repair and refit. The company is renowned for building innovative vessels like Stars & Stripes, the last aluminum 12 metre to win the America’s Cup; Encore, the winner of the 1996 Fastnet race; together with many Coast Guard Cutters and other luxury vessels.
Reliability, aesthetics and functionality are critical in fast ferry design and for Patricia Olivia II, Derecktor Shipyards partnered with world leading designers including:
• Nigel Gee & Associates (now BMT Nigel Gee) who provided design of the hull structure, machinery, systems and fit-out in conjunction with the hull design and the tank testing
• Pininfarina, a leading Italian automotive and marine designer, who developed the racy exterior styling and
• Arquitecto Julio Cesar Ortega who was engaged to design the luxurious interior to Buquebus’ exact requirements
After detailed analysis and tank testing, the designers settled upon a chine hull catamaran design which was proven to offer much less resistance at high speed than a more conventional round bilge catamaran design. The vessel is fitted with a Detroit Diesel TF80 Marine Turbine that uses a Cincinnati MA107 gearbox and two AlliedSignal TF40 marine turbines, with a total power of 5,535 kW installed in each hull. Each pair of turbines are mounted directly onto the Cincinnati gearbox. The gearbox combines the power and reduces the single output shaft speed to 765 rpm. Independent clutches on the turbine input shafts allow for single turbine operation in each hull for slower operating speeds and should it be required, power from the second turbine can be brought online almost immediately. The gearbox output shaft can be clutched to totally disengage power to the two MJP 950 DD waterjets when alongside. The two MJP waterjets each pump 662,500 litres of water per minute at full speed!
Patricia Olivia II features include:
• Italian exterior styling
• Excellent acceleration and maneuverability
• A spacious interior saloon offering comfortable accommodation for 300 passengers, including:
– 4 VIP seats in a private suite
– 56 First Class seats with bar and toilets
– 248 Economy Class seats with bar and toilets
• Duty free shop
• A spacious wheelhouse that provides the crew with excellent visibility
• Air conditioning throughout
• Tinted windows that provide excellent all round visibility for passengers
• Overhead locker space for hand luggage
• Low onboard noise levels.
• Low wake-wash even at very high speeds.
• Maritime Dynamics T-foils and Trim Tabs improve stability and seakeeping.
Patricia Olivia II can sustain loaded service speeds in excess of 50 knots. With two turbines shut down, Patricia Olivia IIcan achieve up to 40 knots.
To optimize seakeeping and onboard comfort, a full Maritime Dynamics ride control system was fitted which features an active T-Foil and Trim Tab on each hull.
